A Decision for Transition

Friends,

With the help of my wife Amy and the Executive Young Life Committee, I have made a decision to transition out of my role as Area Director of Young Life Michiana. It is a decision based on what I believe is right for the area and for me.

I plan to continue to lead Young Life Michiana through a healthy staff transition, which we estimate will take place between August and November. Amy and I plan on remaining in the South Bend area and plan to continue to serve Young Life here as volunteers. We have been very involved in getting Young Life going in the PHM school district and plan to follow through.

Young Life will be in great hands in Michiana. I am so excited that my partner in ministry over the past two years, Caryn Schierbeek, will be our next Area Director! Caryn is a great leader, a strategic thinker, and has a deep love for Jesus and for kids. She has done an amazing job leading and growing our ministries at Adams and Clay.

So, what’s next for me? This is where we need your prayers. As we continue to transition out of the current position, we need discernment concerning what is next.

Over the past two years, I’ve been feeling a nudge to “influence (or minister to) leaders” in business and in ministry. This has led me to become a Leadership Coach (with membership in the International Coaching Federation) and a certified consultant in the Enneagram (February 2015), a personality profile that shows how our greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses are wrapped around the same thing. I’ve also been trained and continue to be mentored by a friend and Master Certified Coach specializing in Executive Leadership. Check out my new blog on leadership and life at www.bradsytsma.com.

Currently, I am also the Associate Director of Young Life’s Centurion Project. This is a mission-wide effort to train high performing Area Directors who have been in that role for at least five years. This job is 25% of my time and remains on the table for me in 2016-2017.

Future possibilities I am considering…

  • Start my own coaching business, continue with the Centurion Project, and possibly find another role within Young Life that would bring me to 50%. This would allow me to continue to offer my experience (20+ years) to Young Life and make a smooth transition.
  • Use my coaching/relational skills for a business, college, or ministry in leadership development, public relations, or sales.

Please pray for us as we seek God’s call on our future.

We are beyond grateful for our time in Young Life Michiana and for the faithfulness of so many to ensure kids have the opportunity to meet Jesus Christ and follow him in this community!

We’ll see you soon!

Brad & Amy
